a) Some problems I predict I will encounter with this assignment is using the clone tool because I have never used it before. However, the biggest problem I think I will encounter is making the image look good and by that I mean making it look like the original, with no blotches or streaks, but one smooth and clean photograph.
b) To create this project I used Photoshop. After inserting the original damaged photo I used the spot healing brush to clear blemishes on the man’s face. To fix the big gap in his forehead I used the clone tool, I hit alt and cloned a clean spot of his face and then went over to the gap area and filled the spot in. For the left side of his hair I used the content-aware move tool by drawing a shape around the right side of his hair, duplicated this shape and moved, flipped and rotated it until it looked natural on his left side. To make his hair look fluffier and not so rigid I put a quick mask on the shape and carefully cut away some hair with a soft brush. For his suit I used the spot healing tool for small imperfections and for his shirt I used the clone and smudge tool to blend and make his whole shirt white. As for the background, I used the spot healing tool to clear up a section and then I used the clone tool to duplicate this section and fix the rest of the background. I adjusted the image to a black and white filter and then added a border. To add the border I went to canvas size and made a relative border with 20 pixels by 20 pixels. Since this layer was not set as the background I had to add an additional layer and fill it black. I finished the project by inserting a text box in the bottom left corner with my name and saving the file both as a psd and web ready file.
c) One problem I encountered during this project was the border. When I went to canvas size and changed the size to 20 pixels by 20 pixels and clicked relative it would not allow me to make the extension colour black. The result was the right size border but it had no colour it was clear. I realized the problem was my layer of the man, it was not set as the background but rather was just another ordinary layer. To fix this, I followed through with the original instructions and set the border to 20 by 20 pixels so I still had the clear border and then I inserted a new layer, filled it black, and placed it under all the other layers so the border appeared black.
d) After completing this assignment, one thing I would’ve liked to change about my project is the man’s left eye. To me it looks odd or out of place because it’s duller than the right. I think I would’ve liked to sharpen or recolour the eye a darker shade of black so it fit more with the other eye and unified the picture.
e) ASSIGNMENT INPUT: 1) I did enjoy this assignment because I found it fun and worthwhile. Fun because I personally enjoy being able to see the before and after product, so to take a picture that was completely destroyed and make it look like the original was enjoyable for me. I also found it worthwhile because this is something I did not know how to do before but now I know how to use these new tools and these methods I’ve learned I can use for other personal pictures to enhance quality, so it’s practical. 2) One thing I’d recommend changing is the colour of the photo perhaps allowing students to choose what saturation or hue they want the picture. For instance, instead of just a black or white filter students could also choose to do a bronze, sepia, inkwell or etc. However, I don’t think this to be a big problem and overall the assignment was well done.
